Angling, Anyone?

When I say “fishing trip,” anyone think obvious NYC outing? Well, why not? I’m going to let you in on an amazing, well-kept secret—City Island. This little enclave in the Bronx is 20 minutes away from Harlem, by car. It is a quaint strip of seafood restaurants right on the water, and there are several companies who can take you out fishing, anytime your heart desires. Never fished? Doesn’t matter, you’ll get enough instruction to have a great time.

Our favorite charter company is Island Current (https://islandcurrent.com). We went out with these guys for Shawn’s 40th birthday, and they have it down! Don’t want to charter your own boat? No problem: $65 gets you a spot on a party boat, and all the gear and guidance you’ll need (kids and seniors get a discount). Feel free to bring your own cooler of food and drinks and yes, alcohol is allowed. They have trips leaving twice a day, every single day. At 8am you can go porgy fishing and at 6:30pm you can head out for striped bass and bluefish. During the summer they also have a sunset fluke trip leaving at 5pm. Trips last around four hours, and you can reserve your spot online. Be warned, they need a minimum of six people to show up in order to take a trip out, so check in with them before driving your date out there on a random weekday. Or take a gamble and just show up. If they can’t go out, get some lobster at one of the waterfront seafood restaurants nearby. It’s an amazing summer outing, both family friendly and good for groups. And who doesn’t want a chance to work on their “one that got away” story chops!

Pro tips: They charge a little extra to use sandworms for bait; do it. Wear clothing you don’t mind getting blood on (it won’t be your own). Bring a light layer, even if it seems like the weather is warm. Tip for the crew is 20% at least, and a beer if you have it.
